SUN/IRAF V2.3 Installation, 17 April 1986 Sun-2, software floating point
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/usr/iraf/*****
/usr/iraf
 Located IRAF root directory at /usr/iraf, created iraf/local
 for personal file storage. Unpacked tar archive of v2.3, 17 Apr
 version, from master VAX/UNIX system "lyra". (4/17)

unix/as
unix/as/ishift.s
unix/as/zsvjmp.s
 Moved the VAX as/ to unix/vaxas. Created an empty unix/as and
 copied the two SUN .s files into it from unix/mc68000. (4/17)

unix/hlib/mach.h
unix/hlib/libc/spp.h
 Set EPSILONR and EPSILOND for the SUN as in unix/mc68000/README.
 Set BYTE_SWAP2 and BYTE_SWAP4 to NO in mach.h. (4/17)

unix/hlib/mkmlist.csh
 Changed bgrep to grep, since bgrep not available in standard
 UNIX. (Not important, doesn't have to work, so the efficiency
 of bgrep on the development machine is worth the mach. dependence.)
 (4/17)

home$.login
unix/hlib/mkiraf.csh
unix/hlib/libc/iraf.h
 Changed all occurrences of iraf root directory pathname. (4/17)

unix/hlib/mkpkg.inc
 Set USE_CALCOMP to no. (4/17)

/usr/include/iraf.h -> $hlib/libc/iraf.h
 Establish this symbolic link as superuser (i.e. %su; cd /usr/include;
 ln -s $hlib/libc/iraf.h iraf.h). This is necessary for compiling
 IRAF programs. (4/17)

unix/hlib/[dir]1mach.f
 Commented out the VAX data statements, and uncommented the IEEE/
 68000 data statements. (4/17)

TODO: unix/as/*.x
 It would be nice to have some additional assembler modules for
 efficiency reasons. See unix/vaxas. Coding of these can be left
 for later.

/usr/iraf/hlib/libc/kernel.h
 Commented out DEBUGMEM in order to use the standard UNIX malloc rather
 than IRAF's version. This is necessary for some reason on the Sun for
 SunCGI programs to be callable from SPP programs. (4/17)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That completes the initial setup. Now we bootstrap the system.

 % cd $iraf/unix
 % sh -x mkpkg.csh >& spool &

This builds all the bootstrap utilities, then as a final step compiles the
portion of LIBSYS in host/gdev, which exercises MKPKG, XC, etc. If all that
works things are in excellent shape. (4/17)

/usr/bin/alloc -> $hlib/alloc.e
/usr/bin/generic -> $hlib/generic.e
/usr/bin/mkpkg -> $hlib/mkpkg.e
/usr/bin/rmbin -> $hlib/rmbin.e
/usr/bin/rmfiles -> $hlib/rmfiles.e
/usr/bin/rtar -> $hlib/rtar.e
/usr/bin/wtar -> $hlib/wtar.e
/usr/bin/xc -> $hlib/xc.e
/usr/bin/cl -> $hlib/cl.e
 Establish these symbolic links as superuser (e.g. cd /usr/include;
 ln -s $hlib/mkiraf.csh mkiraf). These are required for regular
 users who do not have a .cshrc or .login which sources
 $iraf/unix/hlib/irafuser.csh, for running the cl or mkiraf.
 Ordinarily we only link xc, mkiraf, and mkpkg here, but since we're
 doing development on the Sun outside IRAF, the rest are useful. (4/17)

unix/hlib/alloc.e
 This file must belong to root, since it needs root permissions at
 runtime to allocate devices. Do the following:

 % cd $hlib
 % su
 % /etc/chown 0 alloc.e (4/17)

-------------------------------------------
The bootstrap is now complete. The next step is to do a full system compile.

There are 5 files that need to be hand-compiled without optimization (from
previous experience on the SUN) to avoid getting in an infinite loop in pass
c2 of the compiler. "xc -c" each file to create an object file in its
directory; mkpkg will then avoid recompiling it. Note: see local/bugs
README for description of "-P" for partial optimization instead.

 sys/fio/fstati.x
 math/bevington/matinv.f
 sys/gio/nspp/portlib/gridal.f
 sys/ki/irafks.x
 pkg/twodspec/longslit/transform/igsfit/igsfit.f

 (The following two entries are from the previous NOTES file on tucana;
 I'm not sure if this ishift is the correct one: Doug indicated that
 the fixed ishift on tucana hadn't made it back to lyra, but DIFF showed
 only half of a comment line difference between the lyra version and the
 version unpacked from the $iraf/unix directory in the tucana archive.
 The stgdrawch.x fix also hadn't made it back to lyra prior to cutting
 the tape for this installation.)

 unix/as/ishift.s
 Would not do a right shift, since the 68010 uses two different
 instructions to do left and right shifts, unlike the vax, which
 allows the shift argument to be negative. Changed to use the ROL
 and ROR instructions.

 sys/gio/stdgraph/stgdrawch.x
 When stdgraph kernel attempted to draw high-quality text, it
 began drawing lines and garbage text all over the screen until it
 hit a segmentation violation. Traced to module sgch_flush(),
 "call stg_polyline (pl, op / 2)", (SHORT op), where stg_polyline
 wanted an INT for the 2nd argument. Changed to "int (op / 2)".

Now perform the full system compile (sysgen).

 % cd $iraf
 % mkpkg >& spool & (4/17)

 Begun at Thu Apr 17 13:13:22 MST 1986; ended at Fri Apr 18 06:35:16
 MST 1986, for a sysgen time of 17h22m. The only suspicious thing in
 the spoolfile was in XTOOLS, where mkpkg could not find module or
 label "generic". (4/20)

$iraf/bin/x_cv.e
$iraf/bin/x_display.e
$iraf/vms/
 Removed these files and directories to free up disk space. (4/20)

(help database)
 Ran MKHELPDB from the CL, having neglected to do so immediately
 after the sysgen. (4/23)
