Steve,

The news is mostly good: IRAF is up at IPAC! The blessed event
occurred at 11:44:46 PST on 26 Feb. The new addition weighed in at
a little over 46Mb.

All of our trouble seems to have been related to an obstinate fortran
optimizer. Once I figured out how to turn off that -O flag everywhere
in IRAF's mkpkg, it all fell into place. (As promised, a list of
files that gave our optimizer indigestion follows, but I'm convinced
the problem is with some northern California compiler writers and not
with IRAF.)

I did run into a problem quite quickly though. I managed to make the
help data base by doing this:

cl> softools
so> mkhelpdb

IRAF proceeded to produce lots of stuff.
With many of the "help" requests that I tried the formatted manual
page printed on the screen as expected, followed by a listing of
what appeared to an unformatted copy of the same help file (there
were lots of .xx commands at the beginning of lines). Once this
starts to print out, a response of "n" to "More?" causes the whole
of iraf to crash. If I coax it with an interupt I receive the message,

ERROR: subprocess is hung: process should be killed

wait several seconds and interupt again, then I'm back in the csh
(this is probably our unix doing houskeeping).

Not a very well documented bug, but I wanted to get it to you
right away. The "help" is all I have to learn IRAF! (Sob, poor me).
